I am wondering if I should put a BB up here for my friends. I would love to but I don’t think there would be that much usage for it. If I am wrong I would love to hear about it, you can mail me or leave a comment here. And if so, what type of subjects would you like to see on it? I guess this is kind of like a poll here.

Well later tonight I probably will be posting pictures of my trip to Findlay OH. I did not take as many pictures as I though I would, but I did take a few. It is a beautiful place. I would like to head up there some time again (soon)

Hotels and Travel

OK so I get up to the hotel, and they can not find my reservation!! So I give the guy at the check in place (mind you they do not have a check in desk, but a drive up window) The conformation number with that he is able to find the reservation. Apparently the computer moved it to Sunday because another Michael O’Connor is in the hotel will sunday, and the computer is programmed for it to do extensions of a stay though makeing reservation, and some kind of error checking, well this time it bombed because Michael O’Connor is a very common name. The computer should be programmed to check addresses too, because when the front gate called a few minutes later he asked if I know the other guy and said he was from Cincinnati. But it does not matter much I did get my room. Got in and took a nice hot shower to cleans off the 5 hour drive.

You get a good idea of the priorities in the US when you travel, first on the Ohio Turnpike, every service station had a StarBucks. OK can you say addiction? Second when I get into the room what is the most prominate thing in the room, the TV, it is just big, I don’t see the point of it, I probably will not use it at all, don’t watch much TV.

And it never fails to happen you travel and you forget to take at lest 1 thing, but for me it is not all that critical, it is just the cradle for my palm pilot, so I just have to be sparing in using it (if I even use it) Also I forgot my cell phones power cable, but well I have a cable for the car, I can charge it when I am in the car, I probably will not be using it much since my primary number can not get a signal, there does not seam to be any T-mobile single here, and they don’t seam to have any agreements with any of the people here, so I am using my back up (expensive) AT&T sim card in the cell phone. I get a little signal. I probably will pick up a prepaid calling card, I have not had one of those in eons, but that why I can make the calls that I might want/need to make.

I just got word from my contact in Aptima that she feels that they are set with the demo. OK now I just have to worry about how the demo goes, I am not going to have to put any all nighters for this demo. So I am going to have less stress about it this weekend. Maybe I don’t need to take my work laptop with me to Ohio. But that still leaves me taking 2 laptops as opposed to 1 or none. But oh well.

Demos

Well there is apparently another demo of Vista coming up on the 5th of next month, and Aptima NEEDS a stable version by this Friday. I just hate demos, but OK. I am doing a bunch of bug tracking and making sure things are right and the way they should be, I am still working one bug, it is non-fatal, and at this point, the user will not notice it, the user will see it, but the users will not know that it is a bug, I know it is a bug because I say it is.

Credit cards, ug

Ok so apparently discover card does not think one should be able to use their card after 10 at night. Last night I made some purchases on my discover card after 10. I am gearing up for my trip; I had to get some stuff, the basic for a road trip like an atlas. So I went to pay my cell phone bill today, well it was not accepted do to unknown error, ok so I used my other card. Well tonight I went to CVS to get some toothpaste, well again it was not accepted for unknown error. So I called discover card to see what was wrong, well they asked me about the charges last night, I confirmed all of them, so they said they would unlock the card. Well a few minutes later I got nervous, what about my trip to Ohio, would it get locked because my card has never been used out side of PA. So I called back to make sure that it would not get lock, the operator said she can not guarantee that it would not get locked but by calling in and letting them know about my travel plans it lowers the chance that it would get locked. So now I called Red Roof in to make reservation, they would not take them on the phone now, but said they would call me back to make them, I am guessing that the people that can take them are not there, and I have to want till tomorrow to make them.

Songs, ham radio, and other stuff

So I will be going for a 4 to 5 hour drive this Friday (and again the return trip on Sunday) and now I just have to build a good music list from my iTunes collection. I should be able to make some list that is long enough to get thought the whole trip, (the question is can the iPod, I just might take the car power adapter that I have). I have over 2000 songs in my library. I don’t know why I need a 40Gb iPod, it makes a great secondary hard drive on the mac but I will never fill it up with mp3’s and aac, I don’t have that much money.
I am also going to take my bike out with me, for 2 reasons, from what Trish says it is a small town, so when I am not hanging with her, and I need to go out somewhere I can just bike to where ever I need to get to. And I second I am going to see if Trish would like to go for a bike ride, I probably will not do one of my normal bike rides, those usually last 3 to 4 hours, I think it might be best to do maybe only and hour, and see if there is anything else she would rather do. I am sure she would want to go to the festival she told me that is going on this weekend (heritage day)
Also I need to find the freq’s of the ham repeaters in Ohio, I am sure that once I get out there, I should be able to hit any repeater I want in Ohio, I have a rig that can put out 55 watts of power, going into a 5/8 wave antenna, that I can get so close to a 1 to 1 swr rating, so close that all swr meters I have used report it as 1:1. I probably will also take my HT and the hand mic, always good in the case of an emergency situation. I have a nice cloth mount on my bike handlebar for it.
For the trip I think when I leave work, I will just grab some food for the road, or I might just pack a lunch to eat on the road, this way I can save a few minutes.
In the area of computers, I feel bad that I am so dependent on my computers, I probably be taking all 3 of my computers. Why all 3, well the Mac is my main computer, and I will be taking my digital camera and I load all my pictures on to the mac and store them in iPhotos. My gateway which has become my email box, and finally system. I know I could 1) move all that stuff to the mac, but I am just being to lazy 2) I don’t feel like being disconnected from my email, I probably check it once a day at night after I get back to the hotel. I also feel bad that I am so addict to email that I can not even disconnect myself from email for 3 days!!! man it is only 3 days, and I can not leave the email behind. I will also be taking my work laptop, just incase there is anything I need to do for work. I just found out that there is another demo on August 5th, Aptima wants a new copy of the binary by Friday. And I know just know that there will be one or two more bugs, so this way I will have the work box with me so if I need to I can stay up a bit late and fix any possible bugs that come up, and send them off. I am just glad that most hotels have a “data port” in the rooms, aka: a open phone jack, I just have to remember to take a RJ11 booted cable with me.

Well I been talking with Trish a lot lately and I am thinking this Friday I might after work drive out to Ohio to finally meet her in person and spend the weekend in Findlay. She had said that there is also a festival going on this coming weekend. So well there will be things to do. I probably will come back with a lot of great pictures from the trip. I probably take my bike with me, and see if she would want to go for a bike ride too. All I need to do now is find a motel to stay at for the weekend.

I did not get to do much biking tonight, I did not see the broken glass on the path, well I hit it and my back tire went out, so I walked back to get my car put the bike on the bike rack and went down to the bike shop to get a new tube. But would you not know it, the shop was closed, normaly it is open till 7pm but on fridays it turns out it closes at 5pm. So I am going to have to go down tomorrow to get the new tube. I should buy a spare just in case this happens again. The current tube is so bad it will not hold air anymore.

The net now and days

It is nice now that one can get all kinds of PHP programs for ones site, and all one has to worry about is providing content. I have just added a photo section to my web site (www.mikeoconnor.net/Photos) and I don’t have to worry about how to get the format now, all I have to is dump a bunch of them to the server and the program to batch add them to the albums. I partly miss the days where there were not as many prewritten tools, but when I look at what can be done now I am glad we are not in those days. The question now is what other nice programs are out there that I might want to put on my site. Yes I know that 2 new additions to my site (well not so new to this one, but new in the continual change of sites I have had were I have just moved it from one server to the next) are done at other sites that have free logins, but I rather do it on my own site, even if I don’t know PHP and am using other people tools.

Ok so this is the day after the demo, I am still wanting to hear from my boss who it went. I destroyed my sleep schedule during the demo, but I have put it back on track, I am surprised I did it in one night, I sleep straight though the night, and still got to work early*. Now is the time to clean off my desk of all the cans of diet coke (mmmm caffeine). This coming Saterday I am going to bike for about 4 maybe 6 hours to unwind, the question is should I bike in the city or should I drive out to one of the bike trails, I am thinking about the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail. The Great Allegheny Passage is suppose to make it into the city some day, I hope soon it would be nice to start in Pittsburgh and end up in places unknown.

Ok, so now I am at the office, going to go get some food with a friend (yes at 1:05 am in the morning) but my boss has to demo the program I am working on tomorrow. So I have a list of stuff she wants done, but I have mailed her with some questions about one of them, and I think I fixed a few of them as of now. So I am wanting for a respond from her to see what needs to be done next. Last Email I got from her is labeled 11pm. So I don’t think I am going to get another one tonight. But I am going to push though and do more testing to make sure it all is working fine. But I first going to get some trash food at Taco Bell.
