Android to some day replace my iPod

With the rumors going around that Apple might one day discontinue the “iPod classic” and the fact that as a single use device its price is rising compared to multi-use devices, and finally the fact that I still have the same iPod that I got in 2003 (and we all know hardware does not last for ever). I have thought about what I might need to look at for the future.

I have become much in love with my Android phone (one of the many reasons I got it at the start was that I could program on it, already know java, and did not have to make a investment in a new computer since I did not have a mac) I have been working on my first Android Program. It is coming along nicely.

Combine the top two paragraphs with the fact that my Android device has already replaced my GPS device in my car, I thought I would look around at what could be done for Music and below is what I found:

Amazon’s Cloud drive: nice idea, but I have been less then happy with the Android App it just does not feel responcive, yes I know it is working over the internet, but when I can download a 5 minute YouTube video over Edge faster then I can start playing a 3 minute mp3 over 3g there is something wrong there. Also with that, it does not accept into the music part of the drive any podcast mp3s (and that what I mainly listen to) nor does it seem to dynamically update my play lists, this last one is a major issue for me, as I have 1 play list that I change almost daily, it is called “To Listen Too” and it contains a list (in order) of the podcasts I wish to listen to, and as I listen to my podcasts eposodes I remove them from the head of the list and as new ones come in I put them at the tail of the list, so having it able to update the list as I update the list is important.

Google Music (Beta): well Nice idea like the Amazon Cloud drive, but well they don’t support my version of the OS on my phone (2.1) and I am not going drop money into a new phone when my Cliq is doing great for everything else. Also I have not finished uploading all my music to it, so still not sure how it works, but the fact that it does not have a version of the software that runs on my cliq it seems this can not be the answer.

iSyncer: This is not a cloud system, this might take a bit more of a $$ investment but so far this has proven to be the best so far, what it does is it puts a EXE on the mSD card of the phone, when you mount the sMD card (via the phone) on your computer and run the EXE it will read your iTunes music library and let you copy the play lists you wish to your mSD card. It also creates the play lists for the built in Android Music player. I have tested this so far on my phone (only a 2Gbyte mSD card) and it has worked very well, only have done 2 days of testing but it is promising. I will probably over this week leave my iPod at home during my commute to work and see how it works as my mp3 player in my car while driving. I have moved a few play lists over (amounting to 1.5 Gbytes of music). If this proves to be my anser I will probably invest in a 32 Gbyte mSD card and just replace the iPod now instead of holding till the day the iPod dies, I really like how the “Connected Player” (Motorola’s implementation on a music player on the phone) is working.

SMECO has got to be the worst electric company there is. Heck I have come to believe my cell phone is more reliable then my electricity. Durning this summer I have been getting up to 5 power failures a week, annoying when I get home and find I have to restart my computer, and reset the microwave clock every day. Today I had 2 outages (no wind no rain during the last one) I wonder if there is a place for MD where i can file a complaint about the crummy “service”

I been thinking a bit about social media, this includes Blogs, MicroBlogs (twitter) and social networks (facebook). They can be great tools, but also great ways to embarrass your self fast. I have a blog and an account with both facebook and twitter. I like my blog and facebook, I do use them differently. I will admit when this blog started I blogged things that now and days I will only put on facebook (my security is a bit more locked down then most) Also I don’t get twitter, I have an account, I don’t twitter, and follow some people on it, but all it turns out to be is “I am here, I am eating this” not worth it, I don’t put out stuff on it. Facebook yes some people do the same but it not as bad. And But that is just me.

I am no Apple fan boy, far from it. But this seems to me to be SCO vs Linux round 2 (for those of you who don’t know what I am talking about check out this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCO_v._IBM basically it is a failed companies last ditch effort to make money)

This case is as stupid as the SCO vs Linux one, and the Orical vs Google one. Good news is that SCO lost, now we just need Orical and Lodsys to lose.

Handicapped spots

If you don’t have a plate or placard you do not belong in a handicapped spot. It does not matter if “you are only going to be a minute” or “there are no other open spots” or “you are just dropping off your kids” you are a stain on the face of the earth, you do not belong there, those spots are for the handicapped not the lazy.

I think they should raise the fine to $2000 and a month in jail.

Down here in SoMD there seems to be an epidemic of people parking in the spots for handicapped people, I guess the people here are just lazy idiots.

Since the Addon Akismet is dong a great job of filtering out all the spam, I am going to open up older posts to comments, still if a comment is not caught by Akismet it still needs to be moderated. But since I don’t have to do as much moderation with Akismet getting all the spam I am willing to open up older posts to comments as I will not have to delete 100’s a day, Akismet will do that for me.

Oh and Death to spammers.

phone number 1-800-000-0611

Just got a call from this number, when I answered the red flags went off so fast it was not funny. Claimed to be from Sprint Accounts, claiming my account (which I don’t have one) was flagged and to enter my security pin. Well I hung up. At that point I called my Cell phone company (T-Mobile) to report it. They also advised me I should call Sprint to report it there, just in case some one did get a hold of my old account (my phone number is still the same from when I had sprint, thanks number portability) Good news is that nothing wrong there, and that they were starting to get reports of this scam, and that they were trying to let their customers know.

I post this here so just to spread the word as I have friends that use sprint and just want to get the word out.

More info on this scam can be found at http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-800-000-0611/2#p205564154495719656

It is probably best if you get a call from 800 000 0611 that you don’t even answer it.

I thought instead of just posting these to my Facebook page, I would post them here for the world to see I got a new synthesizer on Friday, I played with it all weekend and this is the stuff I came up with over the weekend. Mind you I was messing around and very rusty on the keyboard so remember 1) may not be played to well 2) I mixed different sounds for the fun of it, they might not be appropriate for the songs, but…
Banjo + Tin Whistle Lift High the cross
O Spirit of Life, O Spirit of God
Played with some sound effects and this is one I came up with, mind you no cars were harmed in the making of this sound effect

and finally a video of my playing with it

Fed Ex fails yet again

First see http://blog.mikeoconnor.net/2007/10/fedex-fails-to-deliver-again/

This is from 2007, well the other day I ordered a AKAI Professional LPK25 Laptop Performance Keyboard from apples store (http://store.apple.com/us/product/TY492LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3MA&mco=MTYwNDY4MTI&s=topSellers)  Well when I saw that they were shipping fedex I know there would be problems (see link above) and I was right!  The above happend in Pittsburgh and this time here in Indian Head MD.

I wish apple had given me the choice of shipping companies, I would have taken ether UPS or the USPS over fedex any day.  Fed Ex fails yet again.

Edit: I did get to go down to the fedex depot to pick it up, the guy there did stay a bit after closing time so I could get my item. The guy that worked at the depot was nice, but still this is not the first time the delivery people have just peved me off.

I just downloaded the Android SDK and did the hello world example, one thing I don’t think I am going to like is that the UI is done in XML, I have to look to see if I can find a “visual editor” for the Android UI desine, I am not a major fan of coding UIs, they are such a pain.

I am going to google it to see if I can find one, I have an idea for a program that I will write if I can get further then just a hello world program, which I am sure I can as it just Java and I am a Java Programmer.

Well tonight I got to really put my new phone though some usage.  Went to meet some people (a friend of mines friends) in DC well when I finally get a parking space I set it GPS location in a program on the android phone called parkdoid. Then grabbing the exact address off of the internet plot the location of the restaurant on google maps which also showed my location so I could find the place.  Finally at the end of the night used the GPS on the phone to get back to my car?

I just got a new cell phone(on Friday), it is an android cell phone (a Motorola cliq). I have played with it a bit (not as much today as I feel a bit sick).
The reason I picked a android is because it is java basid and as I do java programming now it is the programming language I now.  I an hoping in the soon I can start programming it soon.  I have grabbed the software from google already.
Also for fun I am putting this post up via my phone (I really like that has a real qwerty keyboard. And not an on screen at that).

Getting Linux up and running on my quad core

Well I am finnaly getting my quad core box setup for Linux. I originaly got this box back in Oct to play world of warcraft on, but since I quit playing (about 2 and a half months ago) the power of this box is being wasted, so I am moving it over to linux. I put an older 250Gb drive in it to do the linux partition on. Right now as I type this I am running a Linux Utillity called NTFSRESIZE to make the vista partion smaller, so that I can move it over to a VM ware box and run it under there. Then I will claim more of the main 1Tb drive for Linux, but still keep windows for the 2 programs I would like to continue to run on it, I got a lot of work to do, as also I want to move some of the data off of the windows system to the Linux system (then I will be able to make the NTFS system even smaller to just be big enouph for what is needed +/- a few GBs for space that might be needed.
