Today WPLUG had it’s 5 annual picnic. Also today I biked up to it for the second year in a row I biked up to it. This year I got some one else to go with me. I am really happy with how well I did on the ride today, we went up 18th street, and this time around I only had to stop once for a rest, last year it was 4 times, and earlier this year it was 3 times, I am now down to one stop maybe next year I might not have to stop. I will post pictures soon

The new Lutheran Hymnal is out here is my review of it

Well the new Lutheran hymnal for the LCMS came out this month, and I got my copy back on Tuesday, so I thought I would post a review of it, for others who might have an interested in it. These only represent my own option and no one else’s. I would have posted a review sooner but, I have been busy with a lot of stuff. But this is now the 4th hymnal that I own, I have an older Lutheran hymnal from 1921, I have TLH which was put out in 1941, LW which was put out in 1982, and now LSB put out this year (2006). For those of you that are not Lutheran and don’t recognize the Abbreviations I am using here they are:
TLH — The Lutheran Hymnal
LW — Lutheran Worship
LSB — Lutheran Service Book

The Good:

Prays in the front cover for use during worship. But they could have included some prayers for home use also. But over TLH and LW, this is a mild improvement.
Opening up the back cover you find the “Nicene Creed” the “Apostles’ Creed” and 2 versions of the Lord’s Prayer. The good classical one that most people know, and one with updated language. Could be improved, if they removed the newer updated language one, and included something else.
They have included book marks in the hymnal, this could be useful to those that would want to own their own hymnal, and take it to church with them.

The Ugly:
Here is the ugly stuff of the new hymnal; I would say that the ugly stuff here far far out weighs the good stuff above. They have taken page 15 from TLH. No taking page 15 from TLH is not bad, in fact if they left it alone it would have been good, very good. The updated some of the language to the modern English, this is bad, what is wrong with the old Victorian language? It not like that is the only version of the Divine service in the book there are 4 others, so what would have been wrong with leaving the whole of page 15 alone. They claim that they updated the language to make it friendlier to new people. To that I say hogwash, they updated some of the language, and left others unupdated, and it not update this word and leave that word alone. The updated only the spoken parts and left the sung parts unupdated. Remember not all congregations sing parts of the liturgy, so in some parts you say “you” and others you say (or sing) “thee”. I would think that would be more confusing to people then just leaving the whole liturgy untouched. With the changed page 15 they can not even hope to have their dreams filled, and that dream is to have all churches in the synod convert over to the new one, I am sure there are going to be churches that will stay with TLH for the unmodified page 15. If they can take LW’s liturgies and move them over with out changing them, why not TLH page 15. What they will find is that there will now be churches all over the board now, some with TLH, some with LW, and some with LSB.

Things they kept from TLH that were not in LW:

One thing that they brought back from TLH that was not in LW was the meter index. This allowed people to swap tunes and words around by finding other hymns with the same meter. They also brought back the Biblical reference for the hymns. Also they brought back the list of dates for Easter, TLH’s list ended around 2000 and LSB’s new list ends in 2050.

All in all the new hymnal is not as much as a disaster as LW, but it still is no TLH. It might be fine for home worship usage, but I would not use it in a church. Also the name leaves it open for some jokes for Lutheran Ham radio operators. At first when I saw the abbreviation LSB my first thought was Lower Side Band, so the other one for Lower Side Band is Upper Side Band or USB, so would that be the unitarian service book 😉 I know a bad joke but still. Also they put a small joke in the hymnal. You know how some Christians seem to have a phobia over the number 666. Well for hymn number 666 in this hymnal the hymn that they put there is “O Little Flock, Fear Not the Foe” so there you go a small joke placed in the new hymnal.

Finally it may not be a bad hymnal, but at the same time I would not say it is a good hymnal it might have its good points but its failings are large enough to out weight the good points of it.

I will probably add another review of it of the hymn section later, and the other parts, but for now this was a look at the ligurgical section.

A while back I joined a group at work called Toastmasters. I joined because public speaking unnerves me, and the group is one that helps people develop public speaking skills. Today I gave my second speech, I gave a talk on the biking laws in PA. It was received well. I am going to start looking to work on my 3rd speech.

Got a new rear wheel cassette

I went up to Bike Tec (the bike shop I always go to, they are good people and know what they are doing) because I was having trouble with the rear wheel cassette for my bike. When ever I switched into gear 7 on the back the chain would slip. When I went up saying I believed I needed a new one. The person that worked there first checked the chain because that could cause the problem, the the chain I had on was only 400 miles old and still in ok condition. He then looked at the cassette itself, and saw that some of the teeth on it were bent. He said he not sure if he has ever seen that before. So I got a new cassette, and since the common wisdom out there is to replace t he chain with the cassette I got a new chain to go with it. I got that last cassette last year, it is about 1400 to 1500 miles on it.
Also when I was up there I got a rack for the back of my bike, and 2 saddle bags to go with it. I pick the bags up because there are times when my messenger bag is not large enough. Usually I find it slightly smaller then I wish, and on Thursday this week I was taking a large amount of stuff with me to work and ended up putting another bag on my back since the messenger bag was filled to the max (well I did have a few things hanging out of it, it was that full).

A site to give directions for bikers I have been hoping for something like this for a while, a site that give directions on how to get from a Point A to Point B with bicyclists in mind. I will probably abuse this site 😉

Bush vetos his first bill

I think he should have vetoed more by now, but this is a bill that needed to be vetoed. It is wrong to kill a unborn child for personal gain. I know many are trying to change the terms used to talk about these unborn children, that is a step to dehumanize a human. But dehumanizing people does not change the fact that it is wrong to murder them. When Hitler dehumanized people of Jewish decent did that make it right to kill them in the contraption camps? When the slave traders in early american history dehumanize people from Africa did it make it right to put them into slaver? The answer to those questions is that it did not make it right, the same applies here, just because you dehumanize the unborn does not make them less human and just a item to be bought, sold, and destroyed.

Tonight, I had some friends over to play some RPG. About a year ago I got a book titled “The Lord of the Rings Role playing Game” the core book. Well tonight my friends and I finally got to do the first chapter in the adventure. It took a few hours, but it was worth it. A friend of mine (Matt Bell) was the master of the story, and another friend Nick and I were the players. I have to say Matt started out the story well, and I am looking forward to the next time the 3 of us get together to continue the store.

I have noticed car drivers have been more agressive as of late

Over the last few days, I have seen drivers of SUVs being more aggressive as of late, trying to run bicyclists (which I am one of) and bikers off the road. And I think I have figured it out, today I saw a few commercials for the hummer, and they are encouraging people to drive aggressively. One implied that if you don’t have a hummer you are not a real man, another implied that if a woman had one, others would not take advantage of them.
I think there might be a connection between hummer drivers thinking that they own the road, I have noticed a massive increase of drivers trying to run me off the road, usually it happens about once a day, it is now up to 3 or 4 times a day. I seems that these drivers forget that on a bike, or a bicycle are human.
For the longest time I believe what the people at critical mass were making a major mistake with their monthly protest, where they get a lot of people to bike around so many that they block the whole road. But after the last 2 weeks, but I am begin to wonder.
The why the SUV drivers are going, part of me hopes gas goes up to $6 or $7 just to make it impossible for these drivers afford to drive SUVs. I know it will make my food bill go up, but I would be willing to pay that if it gets those a**hole off the road.
Before I was not really hostile to drivers, but with so many drivers trying to run me off the road, it is hard to

I just got back from the Pittsburgh Vantage Grand Prix. I was working as a ham with the other hams to do the communication for the race. I was working at turn 5 there. I will also be working on it tomorrow, I will be going in late since I do have church in the morrning. I did make the mistake of not taking sun block, so I now have a sun burn around my neck, on my arms and my legs. Tomorrow is going to be worse, the temp is predicted to go up to 90. I have put 3 (large) bottles of water in to the freezer tonight, so as the day goes on the water will stay cool.
The worst thing today was that I kept getting this charly hourse in right leg.

Linux on my iBook

Well I could not get my iBook to boot with the Mac OS X on it, it always freezes just after I log in. There were no files on it that I wanted to keep, so I blasted the hard drive and installed Linux on it. It is working now, it is nice to finally have that iBook working. I still have to do some setup to do on it, I have to figure out how to program it to allow me to the other functions that are usually available on the 2nd and 3rd buttons on the mouse. Also I want to setup my bluetooth dongle on it so I can on the internet via my cell phone.

My leg cramps

Published on: July 12, 2006

I have blogged about it before, about how I have had leg cramps. Since that time the leg cramps were getting really bad. Well I think I finally found something that helps with my leg cramps. I picked up some Protein drink mix, and it has helped. How did I come up with Protein as a solution, it seams so odd. Well on Saturday the 1st I just had this insane craving for hamburgers, and I ended up downing 5 burgers (yes 5, probably not the best for my health) and that night I noticed that my leg cramps were not as bad, they were still there, but much less. So the next day I went down to GNC and got a small pack Protein drink mix, the stuff tasted horrible but it was working on keeping the cramps away. I got a small pack just to see if it would work or not. Sunday night I decided to see if it really was the Protein or maybe a placebo affect so Sunday night I did not drink any nor on Monday morning, by the time I got to work on Monday morning I was in major pain from leg cramps. I also ran out of the first pack I got back on the 2nd, so I ended up back at GNC to get a new pack and bigger. I got one that had a different flavor to it. The new one does not taste as bad.
Now my question is, why the heck does Protein help with the leg cramps, from what I could find on-line is that protein can cause leg cramps but I found nothing about it helping with alleviate them. I will admit it does not get ride of the fully, but it helps a lot.

Well today I finally saw in the Tour De France something I have wanted to see since last year. Some one in the break away group win a stage, well it looks like Sylvain Calzati (of Team AG2R Prevoyance) did just that with the second place winner being 2:05 behind him. It was cool to finally see that. But I will admit it was not as exciting as all the other stages where the fight was at the very end of the race. But it was fun to see a break away rider win the stage.
