A while back I joined a group at work called Toastmasters. I joined because public speaking unnerves me, and the group is one that helps people develop public speaking skills. Today I gave my second speech, I gave a talk on the biking laws in PA. It was received well. I am going to start looking to work on my 3rd speech.

Got a new rear wheel cassette

I went up to Bike Tec (the bike shop I always go to, they are good people and know what they are doing) because I was having trouble with the rear wheel cassette for my bike. When ever I switched into gear 7 on the back the chain would slip. When I went up saying I believed I needed a new one. The person that worked there first checked the chain because that could cause the problem, the the chain I had on was only 400 miles old and still in ok condition. He then looked at the cassette itself, and saw that some of the teeth on it were bent. He said he not sure if he has ever seen that before. So I got a new cassette, and since the common wisdom out there is to replace t he chain with the cassette I got a new chain to go with it. I got that last cassette last year, it is about 1400 to 1500 miles on it.
Also when I was up there I got a rack for the back of my bike, and 2 saddle bags to go with it. I pick the bags up because there are times when my messenger bag is not large enough. Usually I find it slightly smaller then I wish, and on Thursday this week I was taking a large amount of stuff with me to work and ended up putting another bag on my back since the messenger bag was filled to the max (well I did have a few things hanging out of it, it was that full).

A site to give directions for bikers I have been hoping for something like this for a while, a site that give directions on how to get from a Point A to Point B with bicyclists in mind. I will probably abuse this site 😉

Bush vetos his first bill

I think he should have vetoed more by now, but this is a bill that needed to be vetoed. It is wrong to kill a unborn child for personal gain. I know many are trying to change the terms used to talk about these unborn children, that is a step to dehumanize a human. But dehumanizing people does not change the fact that it is wrong to murder them. When Hitler dehumanized people of Jewish decent did that make it right to kill them in the contraption camps? When the slave traders in early american history dehumanize people from Africa did it make it right to put them into slaver? The answer to those questions is that it did not make it right, the same applies here, just because you dehumanize the unborn does not make them less human and just a item to be bought, sold, and destroyed.

Tonight, I had some friends over to play some RPG. About a year ago I got a book titled “The Lord of the Rings Role playing Game” the core book. Well tonight my friends and I finally got to do the first chapter in the adventure. It took a few hours, but it was worth it. A friend of mine (Matt Bell) was the master of the story, and another friend Nick and I were the players. I have to say Matt started out the story well, and I am looking forward to the next time the 3 of us get together to continue the store.

I have noticed car drivers have been more agressive as of late

Over the last few days, I have seen drivers of SUVs being more aggressive as of late, trying to run bicyclists (which I am one of) and bikers off the road. And I think I have figured it out, today I saw a few commercials for the hummer, and they are encouraging people to drive aggressively. One implied that if you don’t have a hummer you are not a real man, another implied that if a woman had one, others would not take advantage of them.
I think there might be a connection between hummer drivers thinking that they own the road, I have noticed a massive increase of drivers trying to run me off the road, usually it happens about once a day, it is now up to 3 or 4 times a day. I seems that these drivers forget that on a bike, or a bicycle are human.
For the longest time I believe what the people at critical mass were making a major mistake with their monthly protest, where they get a lot of people to bike around so many that they block the whole road. But after the last 2 weeks, but I am begin to wonder.
The why the SUV drivers are going, part of me hopes gas goes up to $6 or $7 just to make it impossible for these drivers afford to drive SUVs. I know it will make my food bill go up, but I would be willing to pay that if it gets those a**hole off the road.
Before I was not really hostile to drivers, but with so many drivers trying to run me off the road, it is hard to

I just got back from the Pittsburgh Vantage Grand Prix. I was working as a ham with the other hams to do the communication for the race. I was working at turn 5 there. I will also be working on it tomorrow, I will be going in late since I do have church in the morrning. I did make the mistake of not taking sun block, so I now have a sun burn around my neck, on my arms and my legs. Tomorrow is going to be worse, the temp is predicted to go up to 90. I have put 3 (large) bottles of water in to the freezer tonight, so as the day goes on the water will stay cool.
The worst thing today was that I kept getting this charly hourse in right leg.

Linux on my iBook

Well I could not get my iBook to boot with the Mac OS X on it, it always freezes just after I log in. There were no files on it that I wanted to keep, so I blasted the hard drive and installed Linux on it. It is working now, it is nice to finally have that iBook working. I still have to do some setup to do on it, I have to figure out how to program it to allow me to the other functions that are usually available on the 2nd and 3rd buttons on the mouse. Also I want to setup my bluetooth dongle on it so I can on the internet via my cell phone.

My leg cramps

I have blogged about it before, about how I have had leg cramps. Since that time the leg cramps were getting really bad. Well I think I finally found something that helps with my leg cramps. I picked up some Protein drink mix, and it has helped. How did I come up with Protein as a solution, it seams so odd. Well on Saturday the 1st I just had this insane craving for hamburgers, and I ended up downing 5 burgers (yes 5, probably not the best for my health) and that night I noticed that my leg cramps were not as bad, they were still there, but much less. So the next day I went down to GNC and got a small pack Protein drink mix, the stuff tasted horrible but it was working on keeping the cramps away. I got a small pack just to see if it would work or not. Sunday night I decided to see if it really was the Protein or maybe a placebo affect so Sunday night I did not drink any nor on Monday morning, by the time I got to work on Monday morning I was in major pain from leg cramps. I also ran out of the first pack I got back on the 2nd, so I ended up back at GNC to get a new pack and bigger. I got one that had a different flavor to it. The new one does not taste as bad.
Now my question is, why the heck does Protein help with the leg cramps, from what I could find on-line is that protein can cause leg cramps but I found nothing about it helping with alleviate them. I will admit it does not get ride of the fully, but it helps a lot.

Well today I finally saw in the Tour De France something I have wanted to see since last year. Some one in the break away group win a stage, well it looks like Sylvain Calzati (of Team AG2R Prevoyance) did just that with the second place winner being 2:05 behind him. It was cool to finally see that. But I will admit it was not as exciting as all the other stages where the fight was at the very end of the race. But it was fun to see a break away rider win the stage.

Well today I biked out to my parents home. Today I finally defeated 18th street, going up Mt. Washington. I am so happy that I defeated Mt. Washington, but my legs are going to give me major trouble tonight, but it is worth it, I can now say I beat Mt. Washington. I did something like 30 miles today. A lot of it was going up and down hills.
